Chiropractic Care as an Alternative to ADHD Medication

ADD/ADHD and The Chiropractic Approach: An Alternative to Medication

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder affecting children, with ADHD medication being the fourth most commonly prescribed drug. With concerns over the potential long-term effects and black box warnings, chiropractic care provides an alternative to medication with a multi-approach to improve neurological function from the inside out.

The Risks of ADHD Medication

The overmedication of children with ADHD medication is alarming, with serious risks of addiction and abuse, including increased risk of suicide. Drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, and Strattera are some of the current medications used but with side effects unknown in the long term and have registered a black box warning.

Chiropractic Care as an Alternative to ADHD Medication

Chiropractic care seeks to improve neurological function from the inside out by reducing neurological interference through abnormal spine motion correction, neurosensory integration, and nutritional optimization. This comprehensive approach is effective and safe without the risks associated with medication.

Sensorineural Dysfunctions and Integration

The sensorineural system plays an important role in noticing what is happening in a child’s environment. Impairments in this area can lead to ADHD-like symptoms. Neuromuscular exercises and sensorineural integration exercises can improve neurological function.

Nutritional Issues and Fatty Acids

Addressing nutritional issues is essential, with optimal omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratios essential for addressing ADHD. Chiropractors are qualified to detect and correct vertebral subluxations and address neurosensory integration and nutritional optimization, providing a comprehensive approach to ADHD treatment.

Research Corner:

Research has been conducted to investigate the potential benefits of chiropractic care as an alternative to medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2015 examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments on children with ADHD. The researchers found that after receiving chiropractic care, the children showed improvements in their ADHD symptoms and experienced fewer behavioral issues. The study concluded that chiropractic care could be a beneficial non-pharmacological treatment option for children with ADHD.

Another study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders in 2003(10) investigated the impact of chiropractic care on children with ADHD and learning disabilities. The researchers found that after a period of chiropractic treatment, the children showed significant improvements in their behavior, attention, and overall learning ability. The study suggested that chiropractic care may offer a promising alternative to medication for managing ADHD symptoms.

A pilot study published in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing in 2010 explored the effects of chiropractic adjustments on adults with ADHD. The researchers found that after a series of chiropractic treatments, the participants reported improvements in their ability to focus, decreased hyperactivity, and better overall well-being. The study suggested that chiropractic care may be a helpful adjunctive therapy for adults with ADHD.
