Why Chiropractic Care is Essential for Infant Health and Development:
Babies First Year of Life
It is common for people to take their children to the chiropractor. I know what’s going through their minds:
- It’s good? Children don’t have back pain.
- Do babies change the way they behave?
These are legitimate concerns for any parent visiting a chiropractor in Merrillville. In addition, to answer them, I have to start with the most important question: Why Chiropractic Care is Essential for Infant Health and Development?
Why Chiropractic Care is Essential for Infant Health and Development : Being Born
Being born is hard work. In addition, there are many pressures and pressures placed on your child as they travel the world. A recent study by Viola Frymann showed that 90% of newborns suffer from the effects of birth trauma: tension related to the neck and cranial region after birth.
Frymann, an American obstetrician, delivered more than 1,500 babies in eight years. Next, he looked at all babies in the first five days of birth; In fact, most are checked within the first 24 hours after birth. Finally, research has found that things like:
- 10% of newborns have a complete skull or cranial process and can move freely.
- 10% have severe head lesions that are obvious to the untrained observer. The remaining 80% have structural problems in the cranial system.
If left untreated, this trauma continues to affect the growth and development of the child’s spine and reduce the proper functioning of the child’s nervous system. In addition, this can lead to many easily preventable health problems in the future.

Education in its various forms can be frustrating. Although every birth is unique, there is always a chance that the baby may suffer from various problems for various reasons. In addition, even the best birth can cause invisible harm.
Next, a researcher G. Gutmann wrote: “Suffering from the reproductive system remains underreported and therefore untreated.”
What are the possible causes of a child’s injury?
- Short work
- Long work
- Failure to dilate the cervix
- Using Pitocin to strengthen/strengthen uterine contractions
- Use of force or suction
- Cord around baby’s neck
- Cesarean delivery (due to lack of progress)
- Pull or turn the head to deliver the baby’s body
Evidence
In addition to Fryman’s study described above, Harvard University pathologist Dr. Abraham Towbin evidence of spinal cord injury as a result of the birth process. He also found evidence of spinal cord damage in many cases of SIDS and infant respiratory distress.
Finally, birth trauma often leads to neurological dysfunction. In fact, a study conducted by Gutmann that examined more than 1,000 infants concluded that approximately 80 percent of them suffered from some form of neurological dysfunction.
This is very important because 65% of neurological development (brain and nervous system) takes place during the first year of childhood. In addition, during this critical period, it is important that the nervous system is healthy so that the child can grow and develop according to its potential.
What is the possible neurological function as a result of the birth injury?
- breathing capacity
- frequent reflux/spitting up
- Constipation/colic
- Difficulty breastfeeding (impaired feeding/swallowing or retention)
- balance problems
- inability to sleep
- delayed developmental abilities
Chiropractic care focuses solely on relieving muscle tension (which improves brain-body communication) so children can grow, develop and function at their best. As humans, we have an innate ability to heal. Chiropractors lower the barriers to this ability.
Elongation of the spine
A child’s spine stretches by 50% in the first year. There is no time for this growth to happen quickly, so you want to make sure your baby is in good shape and make sure the growth is symmetrical.
Next, the Hueter-Volkman law states that bone changes its shape to stress by reducing bone growth in response to stress (compressive force).
Finally, any bone fracture changes the balance of stress on the bone tissue and can lead to asymmetric bone development. There is a difference between having a straight and strong back like an oak and having a crooked back like an oak.
The first year of life is also the time when the curvature of the spine develops. There is a curve called lordosis in your neck and lower back, and a curve called kyphosis in the middle of your back and sacrum.
These spinal bones are important for movement, balance, posture, protection and shock absorption. Without alignment at this crucial time, a child’s spine may not develop properly, giving them a poor foundation for life.
Improve the performance of the nervous system
Why Chiropractic Care is Essential for Infant Health and Development? The answer lies withing the nervous system. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord and coordinates everything your body does. In addition, movement, a heartbeat, seeing a child’s smile, feeling the sun on your skin, laughter, emotion, creativity, all these things connect the body to the brain.
Next, in infants, the central nervous system controls their growth and development. Childhood is the period of greatest development of the brain and proprioceptors (body sensors), therefore childhood is the time to ensure the health of the nervous system.
Chiropractors care for children looking for disorders in their nervous system that prevent healthy growth and development.
Remember: If your child’s spine is out of balance, it can cause problems with the nervous system. Is it good for fit babies?
Yes. Adverse effects associated with pediatric chiropractic care are almost non-existent, estimated at 1 in 250 million pediatric visits.
There is no single medical system that is better than this, but I encourage parents to seek out chiropractors who regularly treat children in their practice. In addition, when adjusting a newborn, a trained chiropractor will use only the pressure you would use to maintain healthy eyes. The baby is controlled by the technology, then placed in position (usually on the mother’s lap) and pressure is applied.
That’s all we can talk about. It’s simple, safe and effective. Two important studies of chiropractic and babies show that in two weeks (usually three visits) 94% of babies who are well supported by a chiropractor and 25% show improvement after the first use.
In a 2007 study, S. Vallone concluded that “chiropractic adjustments in the early stages of neurological symptoms appear to treat craniocervical disorders safely and help restore a more efficient and effective breastfeeding system for infants and – not a good fit”.
Better immunity from the spine and nervous system
A leader in psychoneuroimmunology, Dr. Candice Pert, says that chiropractic has a great effect on improving the immune system by maintaining a healthy system.
In addition, a pilot study examined the relationship between intensive chiropractic care and incidence of childhood illness. Next, the results showed that children who visited a chiropractor more than seven times a year had an increased resistance (prevention) to childhood diseases.
Many parents, myself included, regularly see their children through chiropractors as part of a healthy lifestyle that helps them develop their strength. Finally, chiropractic is a safe, gentle and effective way to treat diseases of the musculoskeletal system and improve the overall well-being of infants and young children.
